Autism Diagnosis

Learn about how Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is diagnosed

How is Autism Diagnosed?

Diagnosing Autism involves a detailed, comprehensive assessment by a qualified professional, typically following guidelines set by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK.
The diagnostic process typically includes;

Detailed Developmental History

Assessments focus on how autistic traits affect social interactions, work, education, relationships and overall self-perception

Evaluation of Daily Life Impact

Input from family members, educators, or close friends, if available, can be used to gain a fuller picture of the individual’s experiences, especially if masking is present

Gathering Proxy Information

Input from family members, educators, or close friends, if available, can be used to gain a fuller picture of the individual’s experiences, especially if masking is present

Ruling Out Other Conditions

The process involves ensuring that observed traits are not better explained by another condition. A thorough and sensitive approach is essential, particularly given the varied presentations across different groups, such as adults who may have long masked their traits and difficulties
At Riverside Psychology we offer a full psychological assessment conducted by our Consultant Clinical Psychologist, in order to create a psychological formulation and plan. If possible Autism (Spectrum Disorder) is identified, a specialist assessment can be carried out based on clinical diagnostic criteria, including psychometric testing.
